![]() Sully Plantation -- 6.3 miles south of Finetre Built in 1794 by Richard Bland Lee (uncle to General Robert E. Lee and contemporary of our first President George Washington), the buildings of historic Sully Plantation are situated only 6.3 miles from Finetre. Saved from demolition in 1960 (Dulles Airport is directly on the other side of Rt. 28), Sully is now maintained by the Fairfax County Park Authority. Sully is open everyday except Tuesday 11 am to 4 pm; admission is $5/adult and includes a guided tour of the house every hour on the hour; there is no charge to stroll the grounds. There are periodic re-enactments and special events such as candlelight tours. For more information, click here, or call (703) 437-1794. Visit this charming house and grounds, and you’ll step back in time. Manassas Battlefields -- Only a short drive from Finetre, the Manassas battlefields remain the scene of the two great Civil War clashes in 1861 and 1862. Now maintained by the National Park Service, the park is open daily during daylight hours; a 3-day pass for adults is $3. Information for self-guided tours (both walking and driving) is available, and for an additional $3 one can watch the 45-minute film, Manassas: End of Innocence, directed by Academy Award winner Ben Burtt. Other organized events take place periodically. For more information, click here, or call (703) 361-1339. Great Falls -- 14 miles up the Potomac River from Washington, DC, this beautiful park is 12 miles to our northeast. At a location called "Mather Gorge" (so named after the first director of the National Park Service), the Potomac River both constricts and rages as it drops nearly 80 feet through the length of the gorge. The falls are absolutely stunning and inspirational. The park also offers a number of hiking trails and is also the location of the Patowmack Canal. Facilities are maintained by the National Park Service; admission is $5/vehicle. For more information, click here, or call (703) 285-2965. Blue Ridge Mountains -- Shenandoah National Park, Skyline Drive, and the historic towns of Front Royal, Winchester, and Leesburg are only about 40-50 miles west of our offices. For more information on Shenandoah National Park, click here, or call (540) 999-3500. |
